Digital Native

A collection inspired by encounters and conversations with people living with dementia.

Digital Native was a collaboration between the De La Warr Pavilion and the staff and residents of Thornwood Care Home in Bexhill-on-Sea. It took place throughout the Autumn of 2017 explored how craft innovation might help to bridge the gap between a younger generation of digital natives and those brought up before the digital age – people who might be more familiar with hand-crafted techniques.

During this time at Thornwood a combination of tactile and conversational activities inspired ideas which were translated into colour, form and texture. Through this reflective approach, the architecture of the De La Warr Pavilion was used to frame an arrangement of textile objects which explored moments of re-discovery and unfamiliarity. Each piece is adorned with digitally embroidered motifs and echoes the silhouette of a garment to embody quiet dialogues and personal moments in public and private spaces.
